Anorexia is Aspirational

"The websites don't cause the eating disorders don't cause the eating disorders, they just make them aspirational."

I watched this video and was shocked to see what it said. Apparently, there are websites where girls can post pictures of how thin they've become in order to gain support from other people suffering from eating disorders. I feel like it allows members to think of anorexia as a trend rather than a serious problem. I've also read about websites that encourage people with depression to commit suicide -- they code words that won't expose the message they're going for in chats.

I wonder how much say the government will have in this issue. This kind of censorship is interesting to me; should these people be allowed to show the world what makes them feel beautiful? Do you think it'll go on for much longer?

What do you think?

  1. I always thought that anorexic people always kept their eating disorder to themselves so this website seems very strange. I think it is a bad thing that people are "sharing tips" on eating disorders on these websites. You would think that they would want to be encouraged to get help, but it seems that they are just swapping stories and pictures. I don't think that this is causing much harm though and it is spreading the word out on harmful eating disorders. But it still is a disturbing website.

  2. I think that these websites do cause harm to people suffering with anorexia. Anorexia is a serious disease and these websites belittle it to be something normal and beautiful. I don't believe that these sites are simply a place for people to share what they think is "beautiful"; they are the breeding ground for disease.

People have the right to post their beliefs on the internet, so these sites should be allowed. However, I think that if more information about the truth of eating disorders were on the internet rather than these disturbing websites, it may help people to realize how unhealthy visiting those certain sites can be.

  8. hahahah no, it's fine, I get what you're saying? like as much as these websites aren't healthy to us, they are a place for people to go so that they can feel good about themselves. it reminds me of the "what is beautiful?" argument. in modern world last year we were given pictures of beautiful people but then our teacher showed us women whose feet were bound in china. people found small feet as beautiful...so who are we to say it's not?

i just feel weird about the whole government thing, too, i guess. a part of me feels like they've got too much other stuff going on, anyway.
